The 76-year-old, from the Nottinghamshire area, admitted guilt to a multiple criminal counts when he was present at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he refused to admit one particular crime he was accused of, which was involving a nine-year-old child.

'Candy game'

The legal representative, handling the case, outlined the criminal behavior to the legal proceedings.

She stated his targets were children from difficult backgrounds who were staying at a youth camp which he managed.

The man engaged in a "treat game" with the children, the prosecutor said, in which he would access the boys' rooms when they were getting ready for bed and ask them to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".

She stated to the judge Ruben had conducted this practice with the children "over an extended period", and children had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She said Ruben had been able to explain this for many years as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had worries in summer 2025.

The legal representative continued: "Recently" his family member had concerns about the activities, with valid cause.

"They decided to investigate in the individual's items."

The prosecutor said items including infant oil, Vaseline and medical needles were discovered, and his family member notified the authorities about his worries.

She said the man proceeded to play the "sweet game" with six boys that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were everyone unwell the subsequent day.

"Authorities" had not responded by that time," she stated further.

The oversight body, the police conduct office, previously told that it was reviewing the police response of the situation.

The legal representative stated the youngsters were struggling to walk due to being ill, so the stepson called the authorities again.

She explained Ruben then played the "sweet game" in a space of five children.
