They're Doing in America What They Performed within Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and defining instances – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of a few weeks, the nation's leader began displaying all observers his designs for a gilded ballroom two times larger compared to the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing to build it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the existing assessment of fatalities resulting from his reductions to international aid is 600,000 and increasing, and presently a study forecast his energy policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the executive mansion to build a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.

We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the world' toward 'the humble will perish from cholera'

As disorienting as it is to watch the leader try to upend the old idea about democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion within America who should not find it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched across decades while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Essentially, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he denounced in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.

A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold

Therefore allow me to outline the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and because the rapidly expanding group within America might have little sense about him because they identify as atheists or doubters or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; however I believe that there are pearls of great price within Christian narrative.

It is unquestionably not the account of a mighty king arising; rather, a baby is born to displaced parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to evade undercover officers. The infant develops in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his message focuses on affection for other people, specifically for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Christ's response to violence is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a method to teach the attacker; his crime policy indicates that whenever an individual takes your outer garment you should give the person your additional clothing also.

The apparent and direct fact that the Jesus from scripture advocates for a type of radical love centered on the poor has consistently rendered Christian religion something of a provocative belief system: attractive to the general public, but due to its inherent radicalness requiring to be controlled. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – Protestantism was so dominant that it practically blessed current circumstances.

A Battle for the Finest Among Us

Hence I have become encouraged to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump arise during the previous year. It has served as significant comfort to assist in constructing the movement that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged citizens to show up in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags during all protests and calls to the finest aspects of American history.

We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you receive him and receive them or not?

America is best defended, in other words, through connection to the best within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended through connection to elements that cause it to be unique and beautiful, specifically the model of Jesus. In both situations does it suggest pretending the most damaging of both America and Christian faith did not happen; it signifies both humility and belief, a combination that committed US believers should be comfortable with.
