An underground market for unapproved slimming drugs is propelled by social media fitness personalities and vendors on communication apps, based on recent findings.
Investigational Drug Acquiring Traction Via Social Media
The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed weight-reducing properties. Viewers are urged to message these profiles directly for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.
Active Trade on Messaging Platforms
Additionally, a robust market exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of members share comparison images, injection guides and claims of next-day British shipping. Vendors promote the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Understanding Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an investigational injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could help individuals reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Express Worries
Nevertheless, doctors and chemists have warned that the distribution of what is still an unlicensed drug in the UK is worrisome and could lead to individuals injecting products of unknown origin.
Several experts said the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising cost of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.
Legal Status and Implementation
Selling retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be promoted or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Several content creators try to sidestep the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or prison.
Platform Reaction and Content Removal
According to the social media company, the platform has taken down violative material and banned related keywords and query recommendations. The company stated it was dedicated to keeping the service secure and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Digital Marketplace Operations
Investigations also found communities with up to 9,000 members selling the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated search feature, which operates like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up channels with thousands of members, populated with photos of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed guides for preparing or administering at home.
After minutes of entering one group, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most transactions take place. The vendor sent an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.
Product Information and Costs
Inside these communities, messages show dark colored parcels with Royal Mail labels, stating to include new batches. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can choose between powder vials, prepared at residence with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors usually sold at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how long a injector should last, sellers give contradictory responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Safety Measures
A representative for the messaging service said it regularly monitored harmful content on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Expert Cautions
“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind this drug is valid, these digital versions may not include what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in demand to recent price rises for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she said.
Her team has already seen individuals harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Position
A representative from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet authorized … may expose users to possibly significant medical dangers”.
