TikTok Grants The Community Control to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a updated setting that enables them to reduce the amount of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their feeds. This step comes as the company revealed that it now features more than 1 billion AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The update is being tested over the coming weeks before a full-scale rollout. This advancement aligns with a rise in AI-generated material, fueled by recent AI video creators.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Studies have shown that almost 10% of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a competing service only show AI-generated videos. A significant portion of this material is classified as mass-produced AI material, a term for substandard, mass-produced content that is often nonsensical or bizarre.

“We know from our community that a lot of users enjoy content made with AI tools, from AI artwork to informative clips, and we aim to give people the option to see more or less of that, depending on their own likes,” stated a platform representative.

Scale of AI Content

The service announced that there are presently 1.3bn videos on its service identified as AI-generated. Collectively, more than 100 mn pieces of content are uploaded to the app daily, making AI-generated material a relatively small portion of its complete catalog.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be in a position to reduce or increase the amount of AI-generated videos they see by using the content preference option in the application and selecting “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that are already be adjusted under the setting cover news, fashion, beauty, and choreography.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s guidelines require creators to label lifelike AI-made content, and it forbids malicious fake videos of celebrities or crisis events. Any realistic AI-generated clip that is unmarked can be deleted under its community policies.

In addition, the app will from now on add an AI-generated watermark to content made using its own AI tools, or detected by an cross-platform project for recognizing AI-generated material. This measure is designed to help prevent users from seeking to bypass the labeling process.

Educational Initiatives

The company is furthermore introducing a two million dollar awareness program for specialists and organizations to create informative material about ethical AI use. This program will benefit educational bodies dedicated to educating coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has justified its moderation strategy, following discussion over proposals to lay off a large number of safety staff in the UK. The company is planning to cut a significant number of roles in its content moderation team in its British office, with worker representatives and online safety experts expressing worry that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.

A senior executive stated that human moderation would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by filtering out the most distressing content prior to it is viewed by staff. The company stated a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content handled by safety staff over the last 12 months due to the use of its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to integrate people and machines to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we also think it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is making a difference work at speed.”
