The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
