Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to question certain calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
